Beyonce-Super-Bowl

While you were busy this week, we were catching up on this weekend’s buzz: the Super Bowl. With viewers plugged in on social outlets while watching on television, we were able to observe many trends on Facebook, Twitter, and other platforms.  Here’s our recap of all the excitement from this year’s event.

1. This year was the most social Super Bowl ever.

The numbers are in: Super Bowl tweets were at an all time high on Sunday. Garnering more than24.1M tweets, with social media activity exceeding more than 3x that of 2012, the conversation around #SuperBowl was definitely trending on Sunday night. The top moments leading to the most activity? The blackout, Beyonce, and the Ravens’ win.

2. #BeyonceBowl was a thing.

Fueling a large proportion of the social conversation, Beyonce fans lit up Instagram, Facebook and Twitter with their chatter during the halftime show. So much that “killed it” was trending on Facebook following the performance. Queen Bey left a lasting impression on bloggers and players alike, inspiring this gif heavy post as well as this video with NFL players singing along to their favorite songs.

3. The blackout gave brands an opportunity to shine.

A number of brands were quick on their feet to respond when the lights went out in the SuperDome. Leading the charge, Oreo responded quickly on Twitter during the lights out segment of the evening. Tide also moved quickly to get an ad uploaded. Both brands, and others benefited from the free exposure while the conversation was trending in realtime.

4. The ads were the other stars of the show.

For every 7 tweets about the game, there were 2 tweets about the ads. GoDaddy had the most tweets about its ad, at 290K, followed by Taco Bell and Budweiser, at 162K and 164K tweets respectively. Despite the numbers, the GoDaddy spot did not get voted into the top 10 by viewers on Hulu’s AdZone.
